(Toronto, December 7, 2002) "In the Steps of the Masters" opened today at Three Fishes Design and Gallery. This is my first show, and of course like any other artist facing their first show I was quite nervous. The show features academic copies of master drawings and paintings from a broad range of sources from the 16th through early 20th century. They represent the best works from the last 5 years of work and study. I had worked hard to make sure all the 'i's were dotted and 't's crossed. The works had been sumptuously framed by Helen Mieczkowski and her associates at Art Frame 2000. Paul Gilroy and friends had done a beautiful job mounting the exhibit. I was still nervous.
It was fabulous to arrive at the gallery and see the exhibit set up and looking great. As I entered the door the first thing that grabbed my attention was my copy of Titian's "Portrait of a Man in a Red Cap." I looked to my left and gazed at my copy of Fredrick, Lord Leighton's "Pavonia"; a portrait of an Italian beauty named Nanna Ricci. She returned my gaze with her own sultry gaze straight from the 1860's. Everything was ready and waiting to go!
The reception was warm and well attended. Folks enjoyed the art work and were extreemly complimentary. Visitors chatted over some Yuletide mulled cider (or coffee or tea) with almond or coconut tarts. Among those present were George Smitherman, MPP(member of provincial parliament), Barbara Hall(former Mayor of Toronto) with her husband Max Beck and Rev. Dr. Brent Hawkes. All in all it was a super opening day and a fabulous start to my first show.
